In 1965, the society started functioning as a service Co-operative Bank. The next 15 years were very tough with lot of challenges. During 1978-80, the bank fell into financial loss and Co-operative Department almost decided to merge the bank with some other service co-operative bank. But that decision was cancelled due to the strong positive resistance of well wishers and social leaders. This was also due to the able leadership provided by the then President Mr.V.R Parameswaran Nair and Secretary Kavanar K.K Mathen.
The further development of the bank was mainly aided by Sri T.K Ramakrishnan - who was Minister in the Nayanar Government that came to power in 1980. The bank was permitted to distribute the Un-Employment Allowance (provided by the State Government) in Kottayam Municipality and Thiruvarppu Panchayath Area. All those who got that allowance had to open an account of Rs.10 in the bank. As a result, the bank could pay back the loan it had from Kottayam District Co-operative Bank.
The following years recorded steady progress of the bank. In 1993, Morning and Evening Counter started functioning. In 1999 September, Thazhathangady branch also started func tioning. Head Office was shifted to the new building in Thiruvathukkal Jn.
The bank has been function in profit for the last ten years. Now the bank has 14450 members and 22 crores deposit. 28 crores worth loans have been given. Group Deposit scheme is worth 40 lakhs. The bank has undertaken many public service schemes and projects launched by the co-operative department like Special Trade Fairs (during Onam, Christmas, Bakrid etc.), Loan Waiver Programs etc.
The Bank strongly appreciate the dedicated hard work and integrated teamwork of the staff members led by the Secretary Smt.K.K Padmini (working since 1981).
The 90th anniversary celebrations was remarkable with Public participation. The celebrations included Staff Training Programs, Medical Camps, Agricultural Seminar etc. Steps to open a Neethy Medical Store are progressing. Facilities like Navathy Green Card (for regular and punctual customers), Risk Fund (for members) etc. are also getting implemented.
The Bank respectfully remember all the former leaders. Most respectful homages to late and former Presidents M/s Arakkal V.K Narayana Pillai, Mekkattumana M.P Madhavan Nampoothiri, Raubahadoor E.V Padamanabha Pillai, Varikkattu V.K Keshavan Nair, Arakkal Kizhakkedathu Govinda Pillai, Arakkal Padmanabha Pillai, Kalathil Krishnan Kartha, Aroor Gopala Panikkar, Raghavan Pillai, G. In short, the bank has grown from humble beginnings to a prominent financial service organization covering many major areas of Kottayam Town with a sound capital base and ever improving responsible performance. The bank expects the continued positive support from members, customers and general Public. |
